Investors must take risks on spinouts to cure rare diseases

Life-changing treatments are discovered in a laboratory, but they can’t reach patients without the investment community.

Today is Rare Disease Day. Despite the term “rare,” approximately 300 million people worldwide live with such conditions.

For many, there simply is no treatment.

The UK has many great teams working together to conduct ground-breaking research. But with 7,000 rare diseases waiting for effective treatments, there’s a huge need to accelerate any effective solution on its journey from the laboratory and into mass production. We cannot do this unless a new generation of investors take more risks.

Some years ago, Big Pharma was investing in novel treatments for rare diseases, setting up units to evaluate and take forward promising research for development into new treatments....
