Help build a new global database of digital technology being used for social good
Nominet Trust, an organisation that funds and fosters digital innovation for positive social change, yesterday invited members of the public to nominate projects to be included in its directory of social tech innovators called the Nominet Trust 100.
Making a Difference
Charles Leadbeater (pictured above), Nominet Trust board member and Top 100 project lead said “We want to show that digital technologies can make a real difference to some of the most pressing social challenges we face. We see the Nominet Trust 100 as a permanent, growing, public database of social innovators from around the world, there to inspire and educate others.”
Mr Leadbeater added, “We have a small team scouring the world for the most exciting and inspiring examples. But we need help from all over to give us ideas, tips and recommendations for projects and people, companies and communities, apps and hardware that we should look at. The more recommendations we get from people doing different things in different parts of the world the better.”
Developing World
Nominet Trust is welcoming entries from the developing world, and included examples in its announcement including BBC Janala in Bangladesh, which uses mobile phones as a low-cost educational service, budgiT in Nigeria which illustrates government spending using colourful, interactive infographics and Peacetxt in Kenya which seeks to prevent political violence by using peer-to-peer messaging on mobile phones.
Annika Small, CEO of Nominet Trust, said “In order to ensure that we identify a combination of established projects and rising stars, of large-scale international initiatives as well as local interventions that are making a big impact, we are making this a collective effort. By crowd-sourcing recommendations of projects, we hope to create a dynamic, growing and public source of information about social tech innovators from around the world, searchable by anyone seeking a solution to a social challenge.’’
Nominations can be made by emailing the URL to NT100@nominettrust.org.uk
The full list of candidates will be announced in October and the deadline for nominations is August 16th.
