Rave Shades: The Self Assemble LED Glasses Kit

Try your hand at home electronics and light up the dance floor with Rave Shades

Frederick Thomas Ford is trying to raise £925 on Kickstarter in London to fund the DIY LED glasses kit he is calling Rave Shades.

The geeky party gimmick is a home assembly kit based on the Arduino platform and contains an array of 160 programmable LEDs that can display text and animations across the front.

All the hard work has already been done for you by Frederick Thomas Ford so all you need to get started is a soldering iron, wire cutters, and a glue gun.

All the assembly instructions to put together your Rave Shades can be found on Instructables, the project-sharing website for makers, and Rave Shades will also benefit from the online Arduino community for help and tips for modifications.

Maker Revolution

The Rave Shades kit is not the first London based LED glasses kit that we’ve seen on Kickstarter– The Bright Eyes kit by DIY electronics ‘haberdashery’ Technology Will Save Us was successfully funded in November of last year.

Rave Shades are marginally cheaper however, although the savings may be at the expense of design as they only claim ‘moderate visibility’ through the viewing holes whereas visibility was not a problem with Bright Eyes.

DIY home soldering kits seem like a great introduction to home electronics so if you want to ride the wave of the maker revolution and build your own party toy at the same time, then check out their campaign page.
