Darksquare closes £260k round for alternative investment platform

Investment platform Darksquare Capital has closed its first funding round with £260,000 backing from seventeen angel investors.

Founded in 2020, Darksquare was created to lower the barriers to entry to accessing investments based on alternative assets to equities, ETFs and cryptocurrencies.

The company said that 70% of investors are seeking alternative investments to avoid market volatility and gain access to potentially larger investments. Darksquare provides research on these alternative investments.

The firm said the asset classes will include “distressed/special situations credit, forestry, renewable energy and/or real estate”.

The new funds will go towards the platform’s growth ahead of the beta launch in mid-Q1 this year. The company has described the benefits of the platform as removing the need for time-consuming research and providing minimum investment amounts.

“Being well diversified, especially in times of market volatility like we’ve had, is so important.  Despite more people either already investing or looking to invest, the traditional range of available assets remains small unless you have in-depth knowledge or are ultra-wealthy,” said Darksquare co-founder Daniel Harman.

Harman said the firm is aiming to change this by “democratising investment access” and that the team is “thrilled to already see so much confidence and belief in this new marketplace”.

Fellow co-founder Alex Whitney added: “people want more control and transparency with their finances, and fintech’s rapid development has enabled this huge push for innovation to meet this need.”
