British AI-focused data centre startup Nscale is expanding to its first physical location, a new office in Mayfair, London.

Nscale launched in May 2024 and by the end of the year secured a $155m (£115.5m) Series A round.

The company builds and operates infrastructure for AI workloads. It designs data centre cites to support large-scale AI platforms using closed-loop direct liquid cooling.

Announcing the new location, chief executive Josh Payne described Europe as a “proving ground for how technology can serve society”, referring to its “pioneering research” and “forward-looking regulation”.

The Nscale boss said: “London is a natural anchor for this vision. As one of the world’s most dynamic hubs for technology, finance and policy, it connects us to customers, partners and policymakers across the continent.

“It also gives us a base from which to deepen collaboration and accelerate the adoption of AI across industries and public life.”

Last month Nscale was brought on by OpenAI to help build a European AI data centre initiative called Stargate Norway.

The project will provide AI compute capacity to businesses and researchers in Europe.

“Our journey has always been about laying foundations. For sustainable AI infrastructure, for strong partnerships, and for the people who make it possible. This new office is another foundation stone, and we couldn’t be more excited about what lies ahead,” Payne said.
