Just Eat invests in Flypay, driverless cars take to UK roads & more in the Week in Tech

Welcome to your Week in Tech – a roundup of the week’s top technology news.

In this episode, we bring you Just Eat’s £3.5m investment in hospitality app Flypay, driverless cars in the UK, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 and a pancake-making robot.

Investments

In investment news, word-of-mouth MarTech firm StreetTeam raised $10m. The firm plans to use the money to expand globally within the live entertainment sector, and to enter new markets in the future.

Recruitment tech firm Sonovate closed a £9m Series B round. Global Founders Capital led the round, which also included Dawn Capital.

Just Eat invested £3.5m in hospitality app Flypay. As part of the deal, Just Eat will join Flypay as a partner on its new ‘Flyt’ platform, which enables integration between multiple technology services within the hospitality sector.

Other investments this week include the $1m Seed raised by event tech startup Glisser, and the £500,000 Seed raised by Facebook chatbot Plum.

Best of British

A driverless car was tested for the first time in the UK this week.

The two-seater vehicle took to the great outdoors in Milton Keynes on Tuesday.

The software running the vehicle, Selenium, was developed by the Oxford Robotics Institute at Oxford University, and was integrated by the university’s spinout company, Oxbotica.

International story

In overseas news, it’s safe to say Samsung’s having a bit of a nightmare. It’s has halted the production of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone.

This is following the numerous reports of devices catching fire. Owners have been warned to turn off their devices, and can expect to receive a refund or exchange for another Samsung device.

Our download of the week is Albert, an invoicing app to help freelancers and the self-employed manage their invoices.

Available on iOS, the app enables users to organise and generate PDF invoices, finding company information in just a few taps.

And finally, fancy eating your own selfie?

With PancakeBot you can do just that. The device uses 3D printing technology to create images with pancake batter. It retails at $300, and takes a few minutes to print each design. So if you’re after a cheap and fast breakfast, it might not be one for you.
