The ‘complete lesbian community’ dating app Dattch has rebranded to Her and snatched $1m in funding.
Having found its users weren’t quite sure of the name – ‘butch?’, ‘snatch?’ – Elevator Pitch series 1 winner and founder Robyn Exton has revealed the new name and a seed round that will see the company expanding in the US market, while going increasingly global.
Exton had struggled to translate the idea of the app to some in the industry, but now Alexis Ohanian, founder of Reddit, Michael Birch, founder of Bebo, and Andy McLoughlin from Huddle have all put their hands in their pockets.
Exton says the app is more focused than ever on providing a social experience, rather than the ‘Hot or Not’-style apps that have somehow taken the hetero world by storm. This includes content and events that will help lesbian, bi, queer, curious, flexisexual, pansexual and not-so-straight women find each other, plus the continued focus on Pinterest-style profiles that emphasize common interests rather than visual assets.
‘And of course, Her still uses gender verification to keep out the straight men looking for threesomes’, so is available for women to download from the App Store today, with an Android app on the way.
