London-based AI medical imaging startup Hypervision Surgical has scooped £6.5m in an oversubscribed seed round.

The King’s College London spinout is developing medical imaging for surgery by combining AI hyperspectral imaging and edge computing.

Michael Ebner, CEO and co-founder of Hypervision Surgical, said: “Imagine a complex tumour surgery where surgeons can rely on precise measurements and tissue property information to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy tissue.”

Surgeons using the medtech startup’s software can also view tissue perfusion in colorectal surgery, which cannot be seen with the eye.

“Our technology makes the invisible visible, empowering surgeons to make confident decisions with enhanced precision and ultimately improving patient outcomes,” added Ebner.

The seed round attracted backing from HERAN Partners, Redalpine, LifeX Ventures, and ZEISS Ventures. It previously was awarded a grant from Innovate UK.

“Hypervision Surgical’s hardware-agnostic solution has the potential to redefine the standard of care in surgical imaging across various procedures, from open to minimally invasive, robotics, and microscopic surgeries,” said Raf Roelands, investment director at HERAN Partners.

Surgical robots company CMR Surgical founder and ex-CEO Martin Frost CBE joins the medtech’s board with the raise.

The startup will invest the funds in finishing their colorectal and neurosurgery clinical evaluations in the UK. Additionally, the firm will seek US and Europe regulatory approval.
