Delli, an online platform for sourcing independent food and drink launched by Depop founder Simon Beckerman, has raised $6m (£4.6m).
The startup was launched by Beckerman in 2022 alongside its chief executive Marie Petrovicka, formerly an executive at Depop.
Having previously helped make second-hand clothes shopping cool again, Beckerman and Petrovicka have set their sights on shaking up the food industry.
“We see a mega trend in the way food is consumed. Buyers are stepping away from overprocessed, mass-produced food to small-batch, independently made products,” Petrovicka said.
The Delli CEO claimed there’s a real market for food “with a story behind it” and with the company’s seller tools, independent food providers will be able to grow their businesses in the face of competition from supermarket chains. “We can’t wait to bring more real food to more people all across the UK!”
Users can buy and sell local food products from pastries, sauces and confectionary to beer and wine through the Delli ecommerce platform.
Drawing from lessons learned in the fashion sector, Delli is hoping partnerships with influencers and a focus on the storytelling and aesthetics of its products can set it apart.
Delli raised £6m in a 2022 funding round led by Balderton and HV Capital. The Delli backers have returned with additional funding coming from Beckerman himself.
“Doubling down on our investment was a no-brainer, and I’m excited for what’s to come,” said Balderton general partner Daniel Waterhouse.
“Delli has been one step ahead of shifting consumer behaviours around food and drink, and as more and more people opt for quality, independent craftsmanship over mass-produced and ultra-processed products.”
