The UK has seen a significant increase in the number of AI company registrations, with Manchester leading the pack with the largest surge in the past five years, according to new research.
Analysis from insurance group Hiscox found that between April 2020 and April 2025, the number of monthly registrations for AI-related companies grew by 1,227% across the country.
This surge has occurred across a variety of major UK hubs, but none more so than Manchester, which saw its AI company registrations grow by 184% over the period.
Other cities which have seen the highest rate of new AI firms include Leeds with 152%, Glasgow with 133% and Cardiff with 96%.
London, which remains home to the highest number of AI companies in the UK, saw registrations increase by 74% over the past five years.
“The surge in AI company registrations across cities like Manchester, Leeds, and Glasgow highlights just how quickly the AI sector is expanding beyond traditional hubs,” said Adam Atkins, head of technology at Hiscox.
“As more tech businesses adopt and innovate with AI, it’s vital they recognise the new risks that come with this growth. Our new PI cover is designed to help these companies navigate the evolving landscape with confidence, enabling them to focus on safe and responsible innovation.”
