The wider tech ecosystem of the West Midlands has proven itself in recent years as a rising star among the UK’s regions.
Despite its solid basis of innovation, major success in engineering and growing list of promising tech startups, the region has not yet proved itself to be a local powerhouse in AI on the same level.
This does not, however, mean the region has not, or will not, benefit from the rapid advancements in AI. There is a clear desire from local government and institutions to do more with the technology, and while investment is not at a high enough level, the West Midlands is still producing innovative AI startups.
“We’ve seen growth in this space. We find the application of AI and ML within engineering to be one of the best uses of that technology when it comes to the real world results it can create,” said Jaroslaw Rzepecki, CTO at Monumo.
“Given that the West Midlands is an engineering hub, the amount of applied ML and AI expertise available there is only going to increase and to boost these levels of expertise, the local universities need to increase the number of programs that target the application of ML and AI to engineering and industry.”
When UKTN first released its report on the West Midlands technology sector, a culture of collaboration was cited as a major strength for the region, and there’s no reason this strength cannot carry over to AI.
For Rzepecki, this collaboration must be “targeted at applying ML and AI to solve a specific problem a given company has”, rather than a generic goal of advancing AI.
