Britain has long been a nation where important technologies begin. From the jet engine to the stored-programme computer, the country has repeatedly produced breakthroughs that shape entire industries.

Quantum computing is the next test. The UK government’s recent commitment of up to £2bn to accelerate its development and commercialisation reflects the desire to propel quantum from scientific promise to strategic priority.

The ambition is welcome. However, the challenge for Britain has always been ensuring that those breakthroughs translate into enduring industrial capability, and economic benefit, at home.

The question is how that funding will be used to ensure the country does not repeat the same pattern. Investment alone will not determine the outcome.

The UK has a 12-18 month window to establish sovereign capability before the structure of the global quantum industry becomes fixed, as companies scale, supply chains form, and long-term ownership becomes harder to influence....
