The UK must take the opportunity to develop a robust and influential space economy seriously, according to a new report from the House of Lords.

A new report from the cross-party House of Lords UK Engagement with Space Committee has called for a more dedicated approach from the government, that would see the appointment of a dedicated Space Minister to oversee the sector.

The committee said while the UK space industry is a success story, the country has only scratched the surface of what is possible and requires a clearer strategic approach.

The report has therefore called for the UK to publish a funded plan to published on delivering national space capabilities, to lead on space regulation, to address a gap in relevant skills, to increase international partnerships in space ventures and champion sustainability within the space economy.

“Only the most strategic and forward-looking nations will capture the economic and scientific rewards of this new space age,” said Committee chair Baroness Ashton.

“With the right leadership, co-ordination, and investment, the UK can be there. Space is transforming the world, and our report found much to be positive about. Britain should play a role in leading that transformation or risk being left behind.”
