Silicon Roundabout Academy announced on City Road

A new sixth form academy specialising in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) will open this September at a new site on City Road, in the heart of Tech City

The state-funded STEM6 academy will be based at 263-269 City Road, which is currently known as Roman House.

Subject to funding agreements and planning permission for changes to the site, the new academy hopes to open its doors to local students with an interest in STEM subjects from September 2013.

A lack of engineering skills has been identified as one of the key weaknesses in London’s Tech City and the announcement is the latest in a series of initiatives to help improve talent in the capital.

In its first year the school plans to take on 216 students, and hopes to increase to 432 students by 2014.

Last month, STEM6 announced the appointment of its new Principal Designate, John O’Shea, commenting on the new location, O’Shea said:

Tech City already represents one of the fastest growing and burgeoning areas of London and I’m confident that our students will thrive from being at the heart of it

John O’Shea will be one of the speakers at STEM6’s Open Day on 22nd February at Google’s Headquarters in Soho. There will also be a welcome speech from Shuvo Saha, Industry Director of Google UK, and a talk about the importance of STEM subjects from Dr Tony Sewell, founder and Director of Generating Genius, one of STEM6’s partners.
