Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy as announced she and her department will no longer use the social media platform X, claiming that “it isn’t healthy for our democracy”.
Announced in a final post on the Elon Musk-owned platform, Nandy said: “I’ve decided to leave this platform and my Department will too.
“A platform originally designed for free speech and expression now favours abuse and misinformation over meaningful debate.
“It isn’t healthy for our democracy or our communities and I don’t want to support it.”

Nandy has become the second major government figure to leave the platform, following Attorney General for England and Wales Richard Hermer last month.
X has been under significant pressure in the UK due to its hosting and prioritisation of content that has supported direct acts of hateful violence, including recent riots in Belfast and Southampton.
It has also come under fire for its AI chatbot Grok, which has been used repeatedly to generate non-consensual sexually explicit deepfakes of people, a criminal offence in the UK.
