The South Yorkshire town could serve as a blueprint for a wider UK rollout of AI skills and services

New AI pilot programmes launched in Barnsley could serve as a blueprint for modern “Tech Towns” as the government aims to spread digital skills across the country.

Last month the South Yorkshire town was named as the UK’s first Tech Town, a new designation from the government that signals targeted support to rollout new technologies and increase skills.

As part of the tech towns project, the government has on Thursday announced new pilot schemes that will see SMEs in industries considered ripe for AI support received targeted training through the AI Upskilling Challenge Fund.

Organisations will also be invited to pitch ideas for how they would provide AI training for a chance to receive a share of the fund.

Alongside this, local health services will participate in trials to incorporate new advanced tools that could serve as a model of AI-powered healthcare.

“When we named Barnsley the UK’s first Tech Town, we made a promise to the people there – that this wouldn’t just be a title, but a real commitment to making AI work for their lives and their community,” said Tech Secretary Liz Kendall.

“Today we’re delivering on that promise by giving local businesses and workers the tools and confidence to embrace AI as well as deploying AI in Barnsley Hospital to help cut waiting lists and ensure NHS staff spend less time on paperwork and more time with patients.

“Barnsley is showing the rest of the country how we can use tech to build a future that works for all.”

There is hope that a successful trial in Barnsley could be used as a blueprint for towns across the UK.

“This will be the first real example of Tech Town in action in Barnsley, supporting the healthcare and business sectors,” said Leader of Barnsley Council Sir Stephen Houghton.

“The AI Upskilling Challenge Fund will play a crucial role in helping residents build future‑ready skills, adapt to technological change and remain competitive in an evolving labour market, while also allowing employers to future-proof their operations through the tailored support available.”
