Chancellor George Osborne has used his pre-election budget speech to unveil a £room investment in the driverless car industry.
It’s not yet clear where the money will go, but he also outlined support for creating a “new generation of low emission vehicles”.
Osborne also pledged £60m for the UK’s first energy research accelerator, to be located near Birmingham, building on his commitment to creating a ‘northern powerhouse’ outside of London.
Lending his support to the Internet of Things, he said:
“Should someone have two kitchens, they’ll be able to control both fridges from the same mobile phone.”
He has committed £600m to clear new spectrum for mobile signal and trial satellite technology for broadband in rural areas. The chancellor also reiterated the government’s commitment to getting 100 mbps internet into every home in the UK.
